Fostering Public Health Advocacy

The representative from the Regional Coordinator for Tharaka Nithi and Embu Counties from the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, who welcomed the visit and emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing pressing public health challenges.
A subsequent meeting took place with Dr. Juster Mungiria, Chair of the AIDS Control Unit at Chuka University and leader of the Institutional Women Opinion Leaders, and the representative from NSDCC. Attendees included representatives from Tharaka University, Chuka KMTC, and community leaders from Tharaka Nithi County.
The discussions focused on advocacy and communication efforts related to syndemic and HIV-related diseases, as well as the threats posed by the “triple threats” of teenage pregnancy, HIV, and sexual and gender-based violence among women. Additionally, the session evaluated the role of trained women opinion leaders in sensitizing staff, students, and the wider community to these critical issues.
Chuka University has been actively involved in sensitization efforts in partnership with the Maisha Youth Club. These initiatives have not only encouraged students to disclose their HIV status but also created a safe space for individuals to engage in open, stigma-free conversations about HIV prevention and treatment. Sensitization activities have been carried out in-person, online, and via the Maisha Youth Club website, ensuring students have access to support and information wherever they are.
