Researchers Join Forces Against Aflatoxin Threat

Chuka University has taken a leading role in a groundbreaking national research initiative aimed at tackling aflatoxin contamination in Kenya’s food and feed systems. Launched on June 10, 2025, at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) headquarters, the five-year project—RECLAIM-KE (Resilient Climate-Smart Aflatoxin Intervention and Monitoring in Kenya)—brings together public agencies, private sector players, and academic institutions, with support from Danish aid agency DANIDA. The initiative is spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Njage of the Technical University of Denmark as Principal Investigator, with Chuka University’s Prof. Shelmith Munyiri and University of Nairobi’s Prof. Maina Wagacha serving as Co-Principal Investigators. The project will also fund the training of several PhD and MSc students in Kenya through full scholarships. RECLAIM-KE aims to strengthen aflatoxin surveillance and management across the entire food value chain, integrating artificial intelligence, genomic analysis, and microbial biocontrol methods. By involving farmers, regulators, and academic experts, the project seeks to prevent contamination before it reaches homes, markets, and schools. Chuka University’s participation underscores its growing impact in developing locally driven, health-protective solutions with national and global relevance.
