Chuka University statisticians were among top researchers from sub-Saharan Africa who took part in a high-level regional workshop on survival analysis and machine learning in health research. Hosted at Moi University’s School of Medicine in Eldoret from July 14 to 17, 2025, the workshop was organized by the NAMBARI–Moi/Brown HIV Biostatistics Training Program in collaboration with the Data Science for Social Determinants initiative. It aimed to enhance the capacity of African researchers in applying advanced data science tools to biomedical and public health research. Chuka University was represented by a five-member team from the Center for Data Analytics and Modeling, housed under the Faculty of Science and Technology. The team included Prof. Dennis Muriithi, Dr. Elizabeth Njoroge, Elizabeth Magero, Victor Lumumba, and Dennis Sang. Participants received intensive hands-on training in R programming for analyzing complex health datasets. Key topics covered included Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazards models, alongside sessions on the application of machine learning algorithms for predicting health outcomes. Designed for researchers, analysts, and graduate students working with health data, the training emphasized practical skills and real-world applications in HIV and broader health research contexts.
