Chuka University, through its Faculty of Science and Technology, has taken a significant step in enhancing clinical training for students enrolled in the Master of Science in Medical Physics programme. This advancement follows the initiation of a strategic collaboration with The Nairobi Hospital, aimed at establishing a structured clinical residency programme.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under discussion will formalize a residency model that combines nine months of theoretical training with nine months of practical hospital experience. The programme is designed to equip students with comprehensive, hands-on training in key areas such as medical imaging, radiation therapy, and quality assurance. In addition, students will engage in hospital-supervised projects that contribute meaningfully to ongoing clinical operations and research initiatives.
“This collaboration ensures that our graduates are not only academically proficient but also ready to meet the demands of modern healthcare,” stated Prof. Paul Kamweru, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The strategic engagement began with a visit by Prof. Kamweru and Dr. Martin Mutie to The Nairobi Hospital, during which they supervised current residency students and initiated discussions concerning the formalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.
The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer delegated the discussions to Mr. Nicodemus Odongo, Director of Strategy and Innovation, who led efforts to define the framework for the residency programme and explore avenues for long-term collaboration.
This partnership is expected to yield mutual benefits: it will provide The Nairobi Hospital with access to a pool of well-trained medical physics professionals, while positioning Chuka University within key national and international networks, including the Ministry of Health and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
