Opening the session, the Registrar (Academic Affairs) Dr. Samwel Chege outlined the objectives of the induction, emphasizing the need for strong leadership and collaboration to support the university’s academic mission. The first session of the day, titled “Transformative Leadership for Effective Delivery of University Services and Sustainability,” was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei, who emphasized the importance of visionary leadership and innovation in ensuring institutional growth and sustainability.
Later in the morning, Prof. Jonah Kindiki, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Planning and Development), led discussions on Strategic Leadership, Decision Making and Communication, highlighting the role of structured decision-making and clear communication in creating an enabling academic environment. Participants were also taken through the university’s Service Delivery Charter and Customer Care framework by Dr. Peter Mabubi, Registrar (Academic Affairs and Partnerships), who stressed the importance of professionalism and responsiveness in service delivery to students and stakeholders.
In the afternoon session, Prof. Gilbert N. Mbaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs) addressed the implementation of university policies, plans and programmes within the academic division, outlining key challenges, prioritization strategies and mechanisms for effective execution.
Financial management and accountability were also discussed during a session on the Financial Accountability and Zero Query Policy, facilitated by CPA Dr. John Thuranira, the Finance Officer who underscored the importance of transparency and compliance in the management of university resources.
Dr. Chege presented on Consultative Leadership, Implementation and Supervision of Academic Processes and in the final session, Prof. Colomba Muriungi, Director of Quality Assurance, addressed participants on quality assurance and Commission for University Education standards on academic integrity.
The induction concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session allowing participants to seek clarification on policy implementation and leadership responsibilities. The forum is part of the university’s efforts to equip academic leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively steer academic programmes and support the institution’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and extension.
