Chuka Concludes National Training on Advancing Sustainability in Universities

Day three of the Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) National Multiplication Training, placed participants firmly in the spotlight as the first round of Project Action Plan presentations commenced. Under the guidance of Prof. Judah Ndiku (MMUST), each presentation reflecting growing confidence in translating sustainability concepts into actionable institutional strategies.

A keynote address by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei on leading change and measuring what matters in sustainable higher education added a critical dimension, challenging participants to focus not only on implementation but also on measurable outcomes. He further urged them to be agents of change and to have the courage to exercise their own values in driving sustainable transformation within their institutions.

The conversations that followed underscored accountability, impact, and the importance of evidence-based sustainability initiatives, as participants continued to refine practical approaches that can deliver measurable and lasting change across the higher education sector.

The momentum continued with additional PAP presentations facilitated by Prof. Erick Fwaya (CU) and Dr. Umulkher Ali (MMUST), using interactive formats such as gallery walks and peer consultations to refine ideas collaboratively. Participants also engaged with Prof. Bassey Antia (University of The Western Cape, South Africa) on monitoring and evaluating sustainability agendas in Higher Education, sharpening their approach to tracking progress and impact.

Further insights on monitoring frameworks were shared by Prof. Erick Fwaya (CU), before participants made symbolic commitments through the Sustainability Commitment Wall. As reflections and evaluations wrapped up the sessions, the workshop’s impact was unmistakable, ideas had matured into actionable, measurable plans.

The DIES National Multiplication Training concluded on a high note, with a closing ceremony led by the training committee and The Vice-Chancellor, celebrating a week of intensive learning, collaboration, and innovation. Participants were awarded certificates, marking both completion and a renewed commitment to advancing sustainability in their institutions.

From Prof. Judah Ndiku (MMUST) opening call for visionary leadership to Prof. Henry Mutembei (VC) emphasis on measurable impact, the workshop has woven together leadership, digital transformation, and practical action. Participants depart with not just ideas, but concrete Project Action Plans ready to drive sustainable transformation across Kenyan higher education institutions.
