Good Friday for Giving Back: Over 6,000 Seedlings Planted Along River Naka

A coalition of conservationists, students, and community leaders on Good Friday gathered along the banks of River Naka in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County, where they planted over 6,000 tree seedlings in a large-scale environmental restoration exercise aimed at protecting the region’s ecosystem.

The initiative, organized by the Rotary Club of Nithi, brought together key partners including Chuka University, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Chuka Station, the Rotary Club of Chogoria, the Rotaract Club of Chuka University, and the Kenya Red Cross Society (Tharaka Nithi Branch), turning the riverbank into a coordinated hub of conservation activity.

The tree-planting exercise, held on a day traditionally reserved for reflection and worship, was deliberately timed to align with the symbolism of sacrifice and renewal. Participants described their involvement as both an environmental and moral responsibility, choosing to dedicate their holiday to restoring the land.

Youth groups played a central role in the initiative, with members of the Rotaract Club and Red Cross volunteers leading planting efforts along the riverbanks, demonstrating the growing influence of young people in environmental conservation.
