The conference, themed “Strengthening Value Chains for Inclusive Growth in Kenya,” brought together policymakers, researchers, academics, and development practitioners to explore strategies for improving productivity in agriculture and industry, advancing industrialization, and expanding economic opportunities, particularly for youth and emerging enterprises.
Chuka University was represented by Ms. Miriam Njagi, Senior Administrative Assistant, alongside student leaders from the institution. Their participation highlighted the university’s commitment to engaging both staff and students in national policy dialogues that shape Kenya’s socio-economic development agenda. The forum was organized by the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis.
Discussions at the conference emphasized the importance of strengthening value chains from primary production to processing and distribution as a pathway to job creation and increased competitiveness. Participants noted that value addition to local commodities could significantly boost national income, enhance exports, and reduce overreliance on raw material exports.
For universities, the dialogue underscored three key priorities: aligning academic programs with emerging sectors such as agribusiness, logistics, and digital services; strengthening research and innovation to address gaps in priority value chains; and deepening collaboration with industry to enhance graduate employability and entrepreneurship.
