Advancing Physics: Electronic Structure Methods Workshop

The Department of Physical Sciences commenced its workshop on Electronic Structure Methods, under the theme “Physics Without Frontiers.” The training, which emphasized the pivotal role of physics in advancing scientific and technological progress, was officially opened by the DVC (AFP&D), Prof. Jonah Kindiki. He highlighted the importance of inspiring students to engage with the subject and ensuring they graduate as well-rounded and competitive professionals. Dr. Zipporah Muthui, the Project Coordinator, welcomed the guest speakers, including Prof. Dickson Andala, CEO of NRF-Kenya; Dr. Werner Janse van Rensburg, CHPC Research Manager from CHPC, Cape Town, South Africa; and Prof. Kate Shaw, ICTP-PWF Coordinator from ICTP, Italy, who all delivered their presentations virtually, highlighting the significance of physics in driving innovation. Facilitators led participants through detailed sessions on materials research, critical elements of solid-state physics for crystal structure analysis, and the basics of electronic structure methods. The five-day workshop aims to provide participants with a deeper understanding of advanced scientific concepts, meaningful engagement with leading experts, and hands-on experience in electronic structure methods and solid-state physics.
