The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences conducted a two-day Postgraduate Seminar Workshop aimed at enhancing the quality of postgraduate research and strengthening the capacity of postgraduate supervisors. The workshop brought together postgraduate students and academic staff to enhance research competencies, promote effective postgraduate supervision, and reaffirm the University’s commitment to academic excellence.
The workshop was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic, Research and Student Affairs (ARSA), Prof. Gilbert Nduru, who reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing research excellence and upholding high academic standards through quality postgraduate training and supervision.
In his welcoming remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Kyalo wa Ngula, underscored the pivotal role of rigorous research and effective supervision in postgraduate education. He observed that the workshop was intended to strengthen research capacity, foster scholarly excellence, and equip postgraduate students and supervisors with the requisite knowledge and skills to undertake high-quality research and produce theses and dissertations of the highest academic standards.
The workshop featured dedicated sessions for postgraduate students and supervisors. Sessions for postgraduate students focused on the fundamentals of postgraduate research, expectations for quality thesis and dissertation writing, the essential components of a research paper, and best practices in academic writing and research.
The second day comprised a capacity-building seminar for postgraduate supervisors, covering principles and best practices in postgraduate supervision, University policy guidelines, mentorship, supervisor–student relationships, research ethics, and effective management of the supervision process.
Facilitators emphasized that effective postgraduate supervision is integral to the development of competent researchers, the promotion of academic integrity, and the timely completion of high-quality research projects. They encouraged supervisors to uphold professionalism, cultivate constructive mentor–mentee relationships, and adhere to institutional policies and ethical standards throughout the supervision process.
