Chuka University Hosts Supreme Court Lecture on Stare Decisis

Chuka University hosted the Supreme Court Lecture Circuit Series under the theme “Application of Stare Decisis in Kenya.” The session was delivered by Hon. Justice William Ouko, SCJ, who addressed members of the School of Law fraternity on the significance and practical application of the doctrine of Stare Decisis within Kenya’s judicial system.
As part of his visit, Justice Ouko paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jonah Kindiki, accompanied by members of the University Management. Prof. Kindiki warmly welcomed the Supreme Court Justice on behalf of the University and expressed appreciation for the Court’s commitment to advancing legal education through outreach and mentorship initiatives.
The lecture formed part of the Supreme Court’s broader public engagement programme, which aims to bridge the gap between legal theory and practice by fostering direct interaction between students and members of the judiciary.
Justice Ouko explained that Stare Decisis, a Latin phrase meaning “to stand by things decided”, plays a crucial role in ensuring consistency, predictability, and stability in judicial decisions. He cited Article 163(7) of the Constitution of Kenya, which affirms the binding nature of Supreme Court decisions. While acknowledging critiques of the doctrine, he emphasized its continued relevance and practical application in Kenya’s legal framework.
The session concluded with a lively and interactive Q&A, giving students the opportunity to ask questions, gain insights, and benefit from Justice Ouko’s mentorship.
Also speaking at the event was Hon. Joyce Gandani, Chief Magistrate at the Chuka Law Courts, who commended Chuka University for producing high-caliber legal professionals. She ranked the institution highly among its peers, highlighting its academic excellence and growing contribution to the legal field.
This high-level engagement greatly enriched students’ understanding of constitutional law and judicial processes, while further solidifying Chuka University’s reputation as a center of legal excellence committed to nurturing practical legal skills and professional growth.
