The retreat which kicked off on 25th August, 2025 is led by Council Chairman, Prof. David Serem, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, who guide discussions on the university’s achievements, challenges, and opportunities.
The Strategic Plan, which runs from 2022 to 2027, is anchored on three core pillars: Academic Excellence, Student Welfare, and Research, Innovation, Enterprise, and Sustainability. These pillars are supported by enablers such as dynamic resources, a competitive brand, and strong governance and leadership culture. In total, the plan sets out 20 strategic objectives to guide the institution’s growth.
Reflecting on Chuka’s journey, participants noted that the university has consistently aligned its strategies with Kenya’s higher education landscape — from the first plan in 2008–2012, to subsequent plans after Chuka’s elevation to full university status in 2013.
Prof. Serem praised the university management for its commendable performance and called for innovation and resilience in addressing emerging issues. His presentation also highlighted the new university funding model and strategies to keep Chuka University competitive and sustainable.
On his part, Prof. Mutembei reaffirmed that the university is on the right track toward becoming a world-class institution. He encouraged staff and departments to remain focused on delivering the Strategic Plan through teamwork, research, and student-centered programs.
The retreat continues with departmental progress reports and recommendations, ensuring that Chuka University stays firmly on course in fulfilling its mission of academic excellence and societal impact.
