COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the novel SARS-COV2 virus. It is transmitted via respiratory droplets when one coughs or sneezes. The spread is primarily through contact with an infected person and the route of entry into the body can be either through the eyes, nose or mouth.
The commonest symptoms include ;dry cough, fever, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell and difficulty in breathing ,in severe cases.
Among those who develop symptoms, approximately 80% recover without needing hospitalization and 15% become seriously ill with 5% becoming critical.
People at highest risk of severe disease include the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions like hypertension, heart and lung problems ,diabetes ,obesity or cancer. However, anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
To protect yourself and loved ones from the pandemic, we urge you to observe the set out preventive measures which include; physical distancing (at least 1.5 meters), wearing a mask when in public, avoiding crowds, regular cleaning of hands with soap and running water or alcohol based sanitizer, observing cough etiquette and complying with screening measures in different places within the university.
If you develop any of the symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 ,noted to have elevated temperatures (> 37.5 degrees) at the various screening points or have been in contact with a person that has tested positive for COVID-19, you are advised to report to the university dispensary or call the university dispensary on 0772894430, in case of an emergency.
