Dons Retooled for Effective CBET Implementation

Held under the theme, “Retooling Academic Staff for Effective Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET): Curriculum Design, Delivery and Assessment,” the workshop brought together academic staff to enhance their understanding and practical application of CBET in teaching and learning. The workshop was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, and facilitated by Dr. Suleiman Mwangi.

The first day focused on the principles, philosophy and national policy framework of CBET, learning outcomes and curriculum alignment, design of competency-based programmes and course units, formulation of programme learning outcomes and curriculum mapping.

On the second day, participants explored constructive alignment between learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities and assessment, alongside competency-based assessment, rubrics and assessment for learning.

The sessions also covered active learning strategies and student-centred pedagogy, with participants undertaking departmental group work to develop CBET course units and assessment tools.

The workshop concluded with presentations of the developed work, peer feedback and the development of a Faculty Action Plan to guide the implementation of CBET.

The retooling is expected to strengthen academic staff capacity to align university programmes with national requirements, emerging needs and competency-based approaches to teaching, learning and assessment.
