On October 17, 2024, the Faculty of Science and Technology hosted a comprehensive workshop on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for staff and students. The event featured expert facilitators, Mr. Waweru Njora, a Plant Biotechnologist and Genetic Engineer from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, and Ms. Anne Ndanu Mula, Senior Biosafety Officer at the National Biosafety Authority.
The workshop delved into several key aspects of GMOs, including their applications and recent advancements in biotechnology. Topics covered included the impacts of GMOs on health, the environment, agriculture, and the economy. The facilitators also explored cultural perspectives, resistance and controversy surrounding GMOs, as well as future trends in food systems.
In addition to discussing technological and societal implications, the workshop addressed regulatory frameworks and ethical considerations for GMOs, offering attendees a well-rounded understanding of the subject. The event provided an opportunity for participants to engage with critical issues and future directions in the field of biotechnology.
In addition to facilitating the workshop, the experts paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei, further emphasizing the significance of the event for the university’s academic and research community.
