The KUPCA workshop on emerging mental health issues in universities spanned three impactful days, drawing participants from 17 universities. The first day of the workshop delved into pressing topics such as cohabitation and its implications, the culture of instant gratification fueled by drug use, and the effects of social media on mental health. Prof. Eunice Githae, DVC AFP&D, emphasized the management’s support for such initiatives, highlighting the workshop’s inspiring impact on both students and counselors.
On the second day, the focus shifted to critical issues including sexual addiction, self-care for mental health professionals, and the importance of emotional intelligence in fostering better personal and professional relationships. Through in-depth discussions on symptoms, causes, and interventions, participants gained valuable insights. The day concluded with a team-building session aimed at enhancing collaboration and mutual support among the attendees.
The third and final day culminated with sessions on innovative strategies for student mental health support, encompassing stress management, mental health awareness campaigns, and peer support programs. A key highlight was a panel discussion that emphasized the integration of mental health services within academic frameworks to ensure holistic student well-being. Participants engaged in collaborative brainstorming, outlining actionable future initiatives, and fostering a renewed commitment to enhancing mental health support in their institutions.
Prof. Gilbert Nduru, DVC ARSA, closed the workshop, commending the participants for their dedication and underscoring the importance of ongoing collaboration to sustain the momentum generated. Attendees left equipped with practical tools and a robust network, ready to implement positive changes in their universities.
