From Agricultural Waste to Economic Wealth: Chuka University Explores Bioeconomy Innovations in Europe

Transforming agricultural processes into engines of economic growth, industrial development, and sustainable livelihoods is at the heart of the Bioeconomy Startups and Industry Connected Learning Mission currently taking place in Germany and Denmark. Among the participants is the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei representing Chuka University alongside representatives from Egerton University, Pwani University, the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), the Commission for University Education (CUE), and Biodigesters Manufacturing Ltd.

Hosted at the University of Hohenheim in Germany, the mission is exposing participants to global best practices in innovation, value addition, and modern agricultural production systems. Through expert-led lectures, interactive discussions, and visits to dairy processing industries and commercial farms, the team is gaining practical insights into how agriculture can drive sustainable economic transformation.

Today’s engagements focus on exploring how agricultural processes can be strategically transformed into catalysts for economic growth, industrial development, and sustainable livelihoods, highlighting the critical role of innovation in building resilient and competitive agricultural value chains.

The programme aims to strengthen institutional capacity and foster industry-academia collaboration in advancing the bioeconomy sector. Lessons drawn from the engagements are expected to contribute to Kenya’s agricultural transformation agenda, enhance food security, and promote sustainable development through innovation.

Prof. Mutembei’s participation reflects Chuka University’s commitment to building international partnerships that create opportunities for researchers, students, and institutions to learn from global experiences and apply innovative solutions to local challenges. The knowledge acquired during the mission is expected to support research, entrepreneurship, and policy initiatives that advance a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in Kenya.
