InnoFoodAfrica Project

Chuka University, through its Faculty of Agriculture, successfully implemented the InnoFoodAfrica Project a major agricultural development initiative that spanned 42 months, from November 2020 to May 2024. The project was designed to enhance sustainable agriculture through the integration of modern farming technologies, participatory research, and climate-smart agricultural practices. Following the implementation phase, the project entered an upscaling phase that lasted until March–April 2025, during which farmers adopted and applied the improved practices learned in the earlier stages. This extensive effort culminated in end-of-project meetings held in Busia County on 22nd March 2025 and in Tharaka Nithi County on 9th April 2025.
The InnoFoodAfrica Project was a key component of Chuka University’s mission to transform rural agriculture by increasing food security, income generation, and the sustainability of farming systems in Kenya. The university partnered with local communities and stakeholders to implement a farmer-led research model known as Farmer Participatory Research (FPR). This approach played a central role in ensuring that innovations and agricultural technologies were not only developed but also tested, validated, and adopted at the grassroots level.
The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Grace Abucheli, emphasized Chuka University’s mandate in training, research, and the dissemination of technologies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, improving farmers’ incomes, conserving biodiversity, and managing the environment. She underscored the importance of strategic collaboration among agricultural stakeholders to support farmers in developing resilient production systems in the face of climate change challenges.
