In a significant move to strengthen their collaboration, Chuka University and Kibari Bee Farm signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today. This partnership aims to enhance the relationship between the two institutions, fostering advancements in the field of apiculture. The signing follows a benchmarking trip on October 7, 2023, where representatives from Chuka University visited Kibari Bee Farm. During the visit, they gained valuable firsthand insights into the nuances of beekeeping practices and technologies employed at the farm.Chuka University will conduct research on beekeeping plantations, such as canola and sunflower, at the Kairini farm. These demonstration plots are envisaged to benefit farmers in Tharaka Nithi and neighboring counties. In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei stated that Chuka University is entering into strategic partnerships with private entities to bring entrepreneurial skills to the university. These skills will be utilized to generate additional resources and supplement the university’s income.
Kibari Farm will provide the necessary market for honey and bee-related by-products, such as wax and farm products. Additionally, it will serve as a contract buyer for Chuka University’s farm produce, including soybeans, sunflowers, and canola. This arrangement will enable Chuka University to innovate and sustain itself through alternative sources of resources.
In his remarks, Mr. Titus Mwirigi, CEO of Kibari Bee Farm Ltd, stated that this partnership will promote the value chain across all areas of collaboration outlined in the MOU. He highlighted that it will enhance beekeeping practices and introduce cost-effective methods for increased honey and crop production.
