Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (#NSSCJ4) Commences with Global Participation

The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (#NSSCJ4) officially begun, launching a comprehensive training program focused on climate justice. This year’s event dubbed “Igniting Youth Power for Enhanced Global Solidarity on Climate Justice,” has drawn participants from over 87 countries, highlighting its global reach and significance. The fourth Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) began with an international symposium. The opening ceremony was graced by Principal Secretary of the State Department for Higher Education and Research Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, with Hon. Jacquiline Amongin, Chairperson of the EALA Sub-Committee for Environment and Climate Change, also in attendance. Other notable dignitaries included various Vice-Chancellors from universities within the Mt. Kenya East Region.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei expressed great pleasure and immense pride in welcoming participants to the fourth edition of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice. Highlighting the significance of the event, he noted the remarkable convergence of minds committed to addressing climate justice, one of the most pressing issues of our time. He emphasized that the symposium’s theme, “Igniting Youth Power for Enhanced Global Solidarity on Climate Justice,” was both timely and appropriate.

Prof. Mutembei expressed his admiration for the unprecedented mobilization of youth ready to lead the charge for climate justice, describing their enthusiasm and dedication as truly inspiring. He called on everyone to support and empower these young advocates as they take on their critical role in shaping a sustainable future.

Dr. Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, highlighted the crucial role of youth in the climate justice movement. He pointed to the significant interest from applicants as a positive sign of the youth’s readiness to address climate issues. “This is the perfect time for the youth to step forward and advocate for Climate Justice,” Dr. Mwenda stated, emphasizing the importance of young voices in driving climate action across Africa and beyond.

Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Higher Education and Research in Kenya’s Ministry of Education, praised the initiative for providing a platform for youth to engage in climate change dialogues. She underscored the essential role of education in fostering climate justice. “Education equips our young people with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to drive sustainable development and resilience,” Dr. Inyangala said. She described the Nairobi Summer School of Climate Justice as a “beacon of hope and a catalyst for change,” offering opportunities for learning, collaboration, and innovation.
