Shaping the Future of Science

Today, the Department of Physical Sciences at Chuka University, through the Physics Section, successfully hosted the 2025 edition of Physics Career Day under the theme Exploring Careers in Physics. The event, organized by the Faculty of Science and Technology, attracted students, faculty members, and professionals committed to advancing careers and innovation in the physical sciences. It was organized with strong support from the Dean, Prof. Paul Kamweru, and coordinated by academic staff in the Physics Section.
Prior to the main event, Ms. Grace Ateka, the Head of the Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei. The discussions focused on collaborations around safe nuclear energy technologies in agriculture, food safety, and environmental management. They also explored opportunities for joint training courses and laboratory accreditation, emphasizing Chuka University’s role in applied nuclear science research.
The event featured three distinguished speakers. Ms. Grace Ateka, who shared her journey in radiation science and emphasized the importance of mentorship and networking. Mr. Evans Ojwak, Senior Medical Physicist at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), discussed physics in healthcare, particularly in cancer treatment and radiation safety and Mr. Collins Omondi, Head of Civil Applications at AFCONE, highlighted the peaceful applications of nuclear energy in power generation, industrial development, and natural resource management. He also delved into policy frameworks like the Pelindaba Treaty and AFCONE’s role in promoting nuclear safety and cooperation across Africa.
The training provided students with a platform to interact with professionals, seek mentorship, and explore diverse career opportunities in physics, reinforcing the department’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
