Transforming Society Through Science, Innovation and Sustainability at STRIWEEK2026

Chuka University participated in the Science, Technology and Innovation Week 2026 (STRIWEEK2026) held from 18th to 22nd May 2026 under the theme, “Igniting Innovation: Bridging Science and Society for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together researchers, innovators, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development partners to showcase transformative ideas and foster collaboration aimed at advancing sustainable development.
During the preliminary session, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Shaukat Abdulrazak, underscored the importance of research and innovation in national development. He noted that research-driven solutions have the potential to create industries, generate employment opportunities for the youth, improve public service delivery, strengthen resilience, and position Kenya among globally competitive economies through creativity and impact-driven solutions.
The event also featured remarks by Tonny K. Omwansa, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), who highlighted the critical role of technology, entrepreneurship, and partnerships in driving sustainable growth. He emphasized that the socialization of science is essential, noting that innovation achieves meaningful impact when it extends beyond laboratories to address the everyday needs of communities.
Throughout the week, participants showcased groundbreaking innovations and sustainable solutions from diverse sectors. Among the notable exhibitions was the production of safe sanitary pads made from banana fibers, an initiative under the Bio-Ke and Chuka University partnership. The innovation demonstrated how biosciences and renewable materials can be harnessed to create both social and economic impact.
Panel discussions and interactive sessions provided valuable insights into renewable energy, youth empowerment, women entrepreneurship, and sustainable business models, further reinforcing the role of innovation in addressing societal challenges.
The event concluded with closing remarks from the Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, who described innovation as a transformative platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and investment opportunities. He noted that socially impactful projects have the potential to address pressing community needs while fostering scalable growth and long-term sustainability.
