Chuka University has successfully secured a Kshs 100 million grant from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to spearhead a six-year project focused on leveraging nuclear energy and related technologies to enhance agricultural productivity. The IAEA, a United Nations Intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technologies, awarded the grant to support Chuka University’s initiatives in agricultural development.
During the equipment commissioning ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei emphasized that the project’s primary objective is to improve livestock productivity. Prof. Mutembei, an accomplished animal scientist, personally authored the technical project proposal, leading to the successful acquisition of the substantial funding, marking a significant milestone for the university.
The state-of-the-art equipment, valued at Kshs 50 million, will play a pivotal role in enhancing livestock production by focusing on breeding, genetic improvement, and nutrition. The comprehensive project also includes capacity-building initiatives for university staff, with some members having already undergone training in premier international animal production research institutions.
Chuka University scientists will utilize the advanced equipment to analyze genetic material, aiming to enhance livestock breeds and promote various techniques such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer. In his address, Prof. Mutembei challenged university staff to develop fundable research proposals, highlighting the importance of alternative funding sources in the current landscape of reduced government support.
Furthermore, the university plans to establish a Mt. Kenya East Centre of Excellence in Utilization of Nuclear and Related Technologies in collaboration with the IAEA country liaison office. This visionary initiative aims to further solidify Chuka University’s commitment to research and innovation under the leadership of Prof. Mutembei, who continues to set the pace for supporting research and inspiring the next generation of scientists at the institution.
