Varsity Celebrates UN International Day of Persons With Disabilities

Chuka University joined the global community in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3, 2024, under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons Living with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The event, attended by students and staff members living with disabilities, was graced by the University Management, led by Prof. Gilbert Nduru, DVC ARSA and Prof. Eunice Githae, DVC AFP&D.

The day’s activities began with a symbolic walk from Gate F to BSRC Room 206, demonstrating solidarity and commitment to the empowerment of persons with disabilities. This was followed by a presentation session that highlighted the importance of active participation, representation, and inclusion, aligning with the global disability rights movement’s slogan: “Nothing About Us Without Us.” The slogan, deeply rooted in the disability rights movement, underscores the need for persons with disabilities to play a central role in shaping policies and decisions that affect their lives. Attendees were urged to leverage opportunities they qualify for to champion disability-inclusive and sustainable development.

The event concluded with a celebratory cake-cutting session, symbolizing unity and the recognition of achievements by persons living with disabilities. Participants were reminded to take pride in their accomplishments and continue driving efforts toward an inclusive and sustainable future. This annual observance reaffirmed Chuka University’s commitment to fostering a disability-inclusive environment and empowering all members of its community.
