Varsity Successfully Hosts Two-Day Workshop on Malaria Modelling Using R Software

The Faculty of Science and Technology held a two-day training workshop on “Malaria Modelling using R Software” from August 29 – 30, 2024, funded by the Applied Malaria Modelling Network (AMMnet). The workshop was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor ARSA, Prof. Gilbert Nduru.

The first day featured insightful keynote presentations by Prof. Dennis Muriithi and Dr. Mark Okongo, who introduced participants to various malaria modelling techniques, including dynamical, geospatial, and genomics models. The sessions also provided an introduction to R software, data visualization, and computational malaria modelling using machine learning algorithms. Participants were actively engaged in practical exercises to reinforce their understanding of the concepts presented.

On the second day, the workshop focused on detailed presentations and group discussions on malaria modelling techniques using machine learning algorithms in R and R Studio. Participants worked with data from the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) to apply the concepts learned, encouraging collaborative learning and problem-solving. The workshop concluded successfully, leaving participants equipped with valuable skills to advance malaria research and intervention strategies.
