Chuka University, in partnership with the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) and the Tharaka Nithi County AIDS/STI Office, organized a synergy-building meeting to strengthen AIDS Control Units (ACUs) in regional universities and tertiary institutions. The event, led by NSDCC’s Regional Coordinator Ms. Catherine Wanzia, aimed to address pressing issues related to HIV/STI prevention, adolescent pregnancies, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The meeting brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from regional universities, to discuss national and regional highlights, propose actionable measures, and foster collaboration among institutions. A guided plenary session encouraged experience-sharing to advance programs targeting young people, equipping them with support and resources to tackle these health challenges.
Mr. Murithi Nchege, Tharaka Nithi County’s AIDS/STI Coordinator (CASCO), presented targeted strategies to reduce new HIV infections, prevent adolescent and mistimed pregnancies, and address SGBV in the county. He emphasized the importance of concerted efforts in achieving these goals and shared insights on potential community impact.
Dr. Juster Mungiria, representing Chuka University’s AIDS Control Unit (ACU), advocated for institutions to establish youth-centered clubs, such as the Maisha Youth Club, to support ongoing health campaigns and amplify youth involvement in these initiatives.
The meeting saw active participation from students of Chuka University, Tharaka University, and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), who contributed insights and shared experiences, furthering inter-institutional collaboration on youth health programs.
