Sustainable Land Use Management Program Kicks Off in Kibugu Location

The Sustainable Land Use Management (SLUSE) program, spearheaded by the Wangari Maathai Institute, has officially commenced in Kibugu, Manyatta Constituency, Embu County. This field-based experiential learning initiative brings together students, farmers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and government agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, to address real-world agricultural challenges.

The SLUSE program is a collaboration between Chuka University and the University of Nairobi, providing hands-on training to students pursuing Agriculture and Environmental-related courses. Participants will be immersed in daily interactions with farmers, allowing them to identify and address agricultural issues firsthand.

The 2025 SLUSE theme focuses on four key areas: Agro-Entrepreneurship, Irrigation, Dairy Goat Farming, and Macadamia Farming. Over the next two weeks, from March 17 to March 28, students will work closely with local farmers to enhance sustainable farming practices and improve productivity.

To ensure a fully immersive experience, the students will be hosted by families within Manyatta Constituency. This arrangement fosters knowledge exchange between students and the community, creating an environment where academic learning meets practical agricultural application.

As the program nears its conclusion, a Farmer Feedback Session will be held on March 27, 2025. This session will provide an opportunity for farmers to share their experiences, insights, and recommendations regarding the initiative. The feedback gathered will be instrumental in shaping future SLUSE programs and refining approaches to sustainable land use management.

The SLUSE program continues to play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic research and real-world agricultural challenges. By equipping students with practical skills and fostering collaboration between educational institutions and local communities, the initiative is contributing to a more sustainable and productive agricultural sector in Kenya.
