Addressing Mathematics Anxiety in Kenya: A Partnership for Sustainable Learner Success

Kenya continues to experience persistent underachievement in mathematics at the junior school level. The 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results indicate that only 33.44% of learners attained the expected mathematics competency level, highlighting the urgent need to address mathematics anxiety and strengthen mathematical resilience among learners.
In response to this challenge, Chuka University seeks to leverage the expertise of Dr. Harrison Njaru Mbogo, alongside Prof. Rosalind Weir McLellan of the University of Cambridge and Prof. Sue Johnston Wilder of the University of Warwick, both internationally recognized for their work in mathematical resilience and mathematics anxiety, to develop sustainable, evidence-based interventions for junior school learners in Kenya. The collaboration will focus on understanding the nature of mathematics anxiety among learners and designing effective interventions to safeguard them against long-term mathematics anxiety.
Dr. Harrison Mbogo, who paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, is currently pursuing a second PhD in Mathematics Education at the University of Cambridge, where his research focuses on building mathematical resilience among learners aged 7–8 years.
