Amnesty International Expands Presence with Chuka University Chapter

Amnesty International in Kenya officially launched its newest university chapter at Chuka University, marking the 14th such institution to join the human rights movement in the country. The event was held at the School of Law, featuring a joint panel discussion and a celebratory launch aimed at fostering human rights advocacy and government accountability. The panel discussion, consisting of eight student representatives, explored pressing contemporary issues such as femicide and the independence of the judiciary. The event also served as an introduction to the interim committee and leadership of the newly formed Amnesty International chapter at Chuka University. Attendees heard keynote addresses from the Dean of the School of Law, who serves as the patron of the club, alongside representatives from Amnesty International Kenya.

Eunice Obath, the Movement Building Officer, elaborated on Amnesty International’s core objectives, functions, and the concept of the Community of Consciousness. Meanwhile, Amy Ochiel, the Communications Officer, outlined the organization’s campaign strategy, emphasizing human rights issues that resonate with university students and require rapid response action. The launch concluded with a celebratory cake-cutting and photography session, marking a new chapter in the university’s commitment to human rights advocacy and social justice.
