Chuka Joins National Summit on University Sustainability

Chuka University is proud to be part of the Vice Chancellors Summit 2026 taking place in Mombasa. The VC Prof. Henry Mutembei, represents the University at the summit being held at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort and Spa from March 3 to 8. Under the theme “Strengthening Public Universities Sustainability, Quality and Innovation for National Development and Global Competitiveness,” university leaders are engaging in forward-looking discussions on financing sustainability, curriculum relevance, research and innovation, governance reforms, and digital transformation through AI and emerging technologies.

The event was officially opened by Felix K. Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, alongside Julius Migos Ogamba, Cabinet Secretary for Education; Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, Principal Secretary for Higher Education; and Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation. Their participation underscores the Government’s commitment to strengthening governance, research, innovation systems, and institutional sustainability in Kenya’s university sector.

Discussions at the summit are focusing on developing diversified financing models that include enhanced government support, research grants, endowments, public-private partnerships, and internal revenue generation. Participants are also examining ways to align university curricula with Competency-Based Education, labour market demands, emerging technologies, and national development priorities. Other key issues under consideration include expanding research funding, promoting commercialization and technology transfer, strengthening governance and institutional autonomy, building leadership capacity, and accelerating digital transformation through artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making.

The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of a Communiqué outlining resolutions and implementation pathways aimed at repositioning public universities for long-term sustainability and global competitiveness. Prof. Mutembei is contributing Chuka University’s perspective to the national dialogue, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to quality education, impactful research, and innovation-driven development.
