Physics Without Frontiers: Chuka University Powers Innovation Through Physics

Chuka University’s Department of Physical Sciences successfully concluded a five-day workshop on Electronic Structure Methods, under the theme “Physics Without Frontiers,” aimed at equipping students and researchers with advanced computational and theoretical skills in physics. The workshop emphasized the vital role of physics in scientific innovation and featured international experts who delivered engaging sessions and mentorship.
Participants gained hands-on experience with tools like Gaussian and Quantum ESPRESSO, explored Density Functional Theory (DFT), and examined the integration of Machine Learning in electronic structure analysis. They also engaged in practical exercises such as band structure visualization, density of states analysis, and material property comparison, enhancing their technical proficiency and research capabilities.
The training was officially opened by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (AFP&D), Prof. Jonah Kindiki, who emphasized the need to inspire students and ensure they graduate as competitive professionals. The Project Coordinator, Dr. Zipporah Muthui, welcomed keynote speakers who joined virtually, including Prof. Dickson Andala (CEO, NRF-Kenya), Dr. Werner Janse van Rensburg (CHPC, South Africa), and Prof. Kate Shaw (ICTP, Italy), all of whom highlighted the global significance of physics in driving technological advancement.
In addition to technical training, the workshop addressed career development and promoted diversity and inclusion in physics and computational science. Participants benefited from a virtual supercomputing facility tour and took part in collaborative projects culminating in presentations that demonstrated their practical and theoretical understanding.
The workshop concluded with a formal closing ceremony led by DVC (ARSA), Prof. Gilbert Nduru, marking the end of a highly impactful event. The initiative fostered innovation, built collaborative networks, and solidified Chuka University’s position as a hub for interdisciplinary scientific training. With programs like the Electronic Structure Methods Workshop, Chuka University reaffirms its commitment to advancing science education, supporting research excellence, and preparing students for the challenges of the modern scientific landscape.
