Chuka University conducted a tree-planting exercise at Rubate Secondary School in Mutembe area, in alignment with the Government of Kenya’s presidential directive on environmental sustainability. The event supported the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign, which aims to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of the country’s broader climate action strategy.
The initiative was officially launched by Prof. Jonah Kindiki, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance, Planning & Development), who presided over the tree-planting activity. In his remarks, he emphasized the critical role of trees in increasing forest cover, providing shade, mitigating the effects of climate change, and conserving water which is a vital natural resource. He reaffirmed Chuka University’s strong commitment to supporting the national environmental agenda through active participation and leadership.
Mrs. Evalyne Murithi, the Principal of Rubate Secondary School, warmly welcomed the Chuka University staff members and expressed her sincere appreciation for the collaboration. She acknowledged the significance of the tree-planting initiative and encouraged the visiting staff to feel at home, engage with students, and continue fostering meaningful partnerships that benefit the community and the environment.
Also present at the event was Dr. Jafford, the Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies and Resources Development (FESRD), who highlighted the importance of afforestation in tackling environmental challenges. He noted the university’s ongoing initiative of distributing tree seedlings to other institutions as part of its outreach and partnership programs. Dr. Jafford also welcomed prospective students to Chuka University, encouraging them to become champions of environmental stewardship.
Additional remarks were delivered by Dr. Bernard Soi, COD,the Department of Environmental Studies and Resources Development (ESRD); Prof. Christopher Kiboro, Dean, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) and Prof. Jackin Nanua, COD, Department of Food Science and Technology (FOST). Each speaker emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability and the vital role that academic institutions play in nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.
The exercise saw enthusiastic participation from both staff and students of Rubate Secondary School. This collaborative effort not only contributed to the greening of the school environment but also offered a valuable, hands-on educational experience, raising awareness about the importance of conservation and sustainable environmental practices.
