Veterinary professionals from the Eastern Region convened for a two-day conference organized by the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA), held on 30–31 July, to deliberate on emerging issues in animal health, food safety, and sustainable livestock production. Held under the theme “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health,” the conference was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, who underscored the critical role of veterinarians in safeguarding public health, enhancing food security, and advancing sustainable agricultural development through research, innovation, and collaboration. Throughout the conference, participants explored a wide range of issues affecting the veterinary sector. Discussions focused on priority production animal diseases, the role of veterinarians in vaccination campaigns, emerging food safety threats in Meru County, strategies for achieving early maturity in calves and replacement heifers, bee health, the welfare of working donkeys, and the dissemination of the African Swine Fever Strategic Plan. Participants also examined the prevention, control, and management of major diseases affecting sheep, strategies for advancing ruminant health through vaccination, strengthening poultry vaccination programmes, and enhancing the investigation and management of anthrax outbreaks in Meru County. The conference reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, research, and continuous professional development in strengthening veterinary practice and advancing animal health, public health, and food security.
